As a blogger, it turns out I’ve been set in my ways. I’ve been running What A Difference A Word Makes for a year now and, apart from a layout change a couple of months ago, it hasn’t really changed at all. I’ve fallen into the trap of a routine, which in my case makes me lazy. So I’ve set myself some blogging goals for 2017, and one of them was taking part in different memes. So, this is my first attempt to join in a meme. Forgive me if I make any blundering mistakes, I’m learning. WWW is hosted by Taking on the World of Words. At the moment I’m halfway through Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. It’s quite a short book, under 200 pages long, so I’ll probably finish it today. When it comes to short story collections I try to read each story in separate sittings so that I can get a feel for each individually, but I’m weak so I rarely have the willpower to do that. The Bloody Chamber is a retelling of well-known fairytales. They often have a gothic twist to them and Carter’s prose is hypnotic. At the moment, my favourite story is The Bloody Chamber in which a young woman marries a wealthy aristocrat and is taken to live in his secluded castle off the coast of France.
What did you recently finish reading?
I finished I Love Dick By Chris Kraus a few days ago, but I’m still not sure where I sit with it. It’s a combination of memoir, fiction and critical theory, told through letters that a married couple, Chris and Sylvere, write to Sylvere’s colleague Dick, after Chris develops an infatuation with him. There were some parts I had to force myself to lug through, but that being said, Chris brings up some interesting points about how women are percieved within art and academic circles.
What do you think you’ll read next?
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. I haven’t read Gone Girl yet (I know, for shame) but I have wanted to read Flynn’s work for a while. The #GGBookClub are discussing Sharp Objects for this month’s chat so I picked it up from the library this week. I’m not sure what’s in store but I haven’t read a thriller in a while, so I’m looking forward to being pulled in!

One of my problems with short stories is that I tend to read them all together and so don’t tend to let one ‘settle’ before I read the next but I’m too impatient. Very good to see you here on a Wednesday 🙂

I’m in the habit of doing that too. Sometimes two or three stories end up bluring into one and it can be hard to pick them apart afterwards! Thank you, I’ve enjoyed taking part! 🙂

I read the Bloody Chamber about this time last year, but I didn’t end up reviewing it, so I can’t really remember what I thought of it. I like your idea of reading short stories in separate sittings. I do tend to power through them, so I might not get the full effect.

I just finished reading it but I’m not sure if I’m ready to review it. There are so many symbols and motifs that are repeated that I feel like I could probably do with re-reading it! I’m not very successful at reading them separately but when I manage it I think it does help me get a clearer sense of the story! 🙂
